Dojo Reflection

 Stillness Between Movements

By Mornè Johan Slabbert

In martial arts, attention is often given to movement—speed, power, and technique. Yet what is rarely emphasised is the stillness between movements.

It is in stillness that balance is found.

Between one technique and the next, there is a brief moment of alignment. Posture settles, breath resets, and intention forms. Without this moment, movement becomes rushed and unstable.

Stillness is not inactivity. It is readiness.

In correct training, stillness teaches control. It allows the practitioner to remain centred, regardless of external pressure. From this centre, action emerges naturally rather than forcefully.

The same principle applies beyond the dojo. Modern life leaves little space for pause. Decisions are made quickly, often without reflection. This constant motion leads to fatigue and imbalance.

The martial path teaches us to pause deliberately. To stand calmly before acting. To breathe before responding. These small moments of stillness restore clarity.

Strength that cannot pause becomes chaotic. Power that cannot settle lacks direction.

Stillness is where awareness lives. From it, true movement begins.
