About Sensei Mornè Johan Slabbert
Welcome. My name is Mornè Johan Slabbert, also known as Sensei Mornè.
I am the founder of the Trinity Goju Ryu Karate Club and a proud representative of the Kokusai Kenyukan Kai Okinawa Goju Ryu Karate & Kobudo. Born in 1971, my martial arts journey began in 1984, following an early foundation in gymnastics.
I hold a 5th Dan in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate, having earned my instructor’s licence in 2014 and my current rank in 2019. Over the years, I have been involved in teaching students of all ages, leading training programmes, hosting self-defence and anti-bullying seminars, and offering both in-person and online instruction.
My approach to martial arts extends beyond physical technique. I believe that true training develops character, discipline, confidence, and mental resilience, both on and off the mat. Martial arts, to me, is a lifelong path of self-discovery and personal growth.
When I am not training or teaching, I enjoy sharing reflections on traditional Okinawan practices, philosophy, and the lessons that martial arts offers for everyday life.
A Quiet Note
Over time, martial arts became less about combat and more about refinement — of character, intention, and presence. What once focused on technique gradually revealed deeper lessons in restraint, consistency, and awareness.
Selected reflections are explored further in my books, available on Amazon.
